The project lead and one of Zomia’s founders, Anand Gopal, is a writer for The New Yorker and was a finalist for the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for general non-fiction, and the 2014 National Book Award for Non-Fiction. Gopal, along with other journalists, academics, and researchers, started Zomia because they found that the regions (Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan) they were working in were greatly understudied, and lacked crucial legal and developmental aid.

Scholars first used the word Zomia to describe the historically contested uplands of Southeast Asia. (Zomi means highlander in a number of languages spoken in the region.) By applying the term Zomia to their work in nonstate spaces, the Center aims to build on a rich tradition of non-state scholarship and activism, in the belief that empirical understanding of the contested present is necessary for a more peaceful and egalitarian future. Including this background was important in the brand refresh design.

Zomia Center and Colorway Creative worked together to create a visual identity and online presence that would increase awareness of their organization, pay tribute to their influential programs and humanitarian pursuits, and serve as a hub for receiving contributions to their important work.

Thank you so much for your amazing work on the site. We have loved working with you, and would love to work with you again in the future.
